Home of the Ryder Cup
One possible destination for your golf break in Wales is Newport, the newest city in Wales and host to the Ryder Cup in 2010. Situated on the famous salmon river, the Usk, it has a commanding location for access and yet is close to beautiful landscapes such as the Wye Valley. The Brecon Beacons and Forest of Dean are also less than an hours drive away.
Newport has a tremendous history. The ancient Roman Fortress town of Caerleon is here in Britain’s’ most varied and fascinating Roman site with its own amphitheatre which used to seat 6000 soldiers, Roman Baths complex and barracks. The amphitheatre here is also reputedly the site of King Arthur’s round table.
An architectural wonder located near the docks is one of only 6 Transporters Bridges left in the world. Built in 1904 the bridge is a Grade 1 listed structure but still very much in working order transporting vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists form one side of the river to the other via its suspended gondola in only a few minutes.
